On ambiguous verb sequences in Dolgan

  • It is well-established that Turkic languages (as well as some languages from other language families in Eurasia) exhibit so-called verb sequences which often are not trivial with respect to their interpretation (cf. e.g. Schönig (1984) or Bradley (2016) for languages of the Volga-Kama Region). Dolgan, spoken by approx. 1,000 people (VPN 2010) on the Taymyr Peninsula and in adjacent areas, is no exception in this respect, cf. the following example:

    (1) Onton u¨o¨⌢ren-e
    hïldʼï-bït-tara, škola-nï büt-en-ner. then study-CVB.SIM go-BIT.PST-3PL school-ACC stop-CVB.SEQ-3PL ‘Then they went (for) studying, after they had finished school.’ ~ ‘Then they were studying, after they had finished school.’...
