  • The Aufstehen (Stand up) movement, which was initiated by politician and publicist Sahra Wagenknecht at the beginning of 2018, sees itself as a “unification movement” that addresses all those who are disappointed by the increasingly “neoliberal” course of the established left-wing parties. Its core demands include the reduction of social inequality, regulation of the globalized economy, and a return to a strong national welfare state. The chapter examines whether and to what extent Aufstehen draws on populist schemes and conspiracy theories when describing social problems. To this end, official documents of the movement and public statements by members and prominent protagonists are analyzed. The investigation shows that the discourse of Wagenknecht and Aufstehen, with its dichotomous and moralizing distinction of homogeneous groups, with its idealization of ordinary people and claim to represent the majority can clearly be characterized as populist. Although there are no “complete” conspiracy theories in it, there are numerous statements that contain elements of conspiracy theories and conspiratorial undertones.
