  • Well-separated Ni nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 40 to 400 nm were formed by thermal annealing of a thin film. They have been investigated by atomic and magnetic force microscopy in situ in the presence of an additional applied magnetic field up to 300 Oe. Comparison of the corresponding experimental AFM and MFM images and computer-simulated MFM images of small particles having a diameter below 100 nm has revealed the particles to be in a single-domain state. Their magnetization can easily be reversed along the direction of an external magnetic field. An external magnetic field increases the homogeneity of magnetization of bigger particles, the direction of their total magnetization being set by an anisotropy of their shape. The features of MFM images and mechanism of the reverse of magnetization of particles greater than 150 nm have been explained in terms of vortex magnetization.
