  • How do hydrological extremes change in a warmer climate? While heavy rainfall intensifies in a warmer climate and winters become wetter, summer droughts prolong. As a result, the seasonality of runoff will be less balanced (more in winter, less in summer) and hydrological extremes will change. Summer low flow becomes more intense and longer, while flood behaviour varies greatly from region to region. This book article describes the underlying processes and provides examples focussing on Europe.
