The article starts with some definitions of reconciliation in order to introduce the complexity of the phenomenon and its fundamental tension to justice. Today's common approach to justice (in the Western tradition) has been informed by the ground-braking differentiations of Aristotle. Yet this has led to a dominating retributive approach, which does not seem to promise possibilities towards reconciliation. As an alternative a restorative approach to justice has been presented during the past decades (among others by the historic Peace Church of the Mennonites) in order to overcome the apparent contradiction of justice and reconciliation, inspired by biblical reflections on shalom and covenant. Meanwhile restorative justice has become a widely developed approach as well as an established practice for healing processes of broken relationships. A theological reflection on the image of the Final Judgment is proposed to take restorative justice to a next step towards transformative justice - the creation of healed relations and the liberation from a painful past. In such an approach justice becomes a primary condition for making reconciliation possible. In the following short article (by Andrés Pacheco Lozano), the relation of reconciliation and justice is applied to the current conflict-situation within Colombia. A failed reconciliation-process is analyzed and a new approach, which would introduce the principles of restorative justice to a true reconciliation process is proposed as a possible way forward.
