Innovation not only involves the introduction of radical changes in organizational processes or technologies but also the incremental improvement of procedures at the individual worker level. One type of the latter is role innovation. Role innovation is important for understanding the dynamics of innovation processes in organizations. This paper first introduces a questionnaire for measuring individual role innovation in trade companies. Two independent studies confirm its construct and criterion validity. Second, it examines in a third study the relationship of individual role innovation and indicators of organizational innovativeness. The indicators of organizational innovativeness considered are owner reports regarding the number and magnitude of recent innovations as well as innovativeness assessments by members and customers of the organization. Correlation analyses confirm the relationship between individual role innovation and measures of organizational innovativeness.
