- In a recent decade Estonia has seen a blooming NGO and grass roots activism landscape. There are numerous initiatives, organisations and activists where people are engaged with environmentalism, helping refugees, propagating animal rights, safe drug use or bicycle riding. All these movements are dominated by young people, who are very vocal, use social media skilfully and are keen to participate in discussions with their opponents. In my talk I depict and analyse this phenomenon. Such activism is inspired both by the DIY tradition of the Soviet past and influences of the Western activism. Very interesting is that although these movements do not see themselves as underground, alternative or left wing, they have adapted the strategies and practices of the left wing underground and made them mainstream. One of the topics that I focus on is the environmentalism movement which is very strong but politically controversial. That is also demonstrated by the fact that in a presence of a strong movement the Green Party of Estonia is one of the weakest and has never been elected to the parliament. I also show the development of the strategies of the animal rights movement as an embodiment of how a niche movement adapts more and more mainstream strategies and becomes increasingly successful. As a final moment, we see the emergence of young politicians who become members of the parliament but have the beginning of their career in management, regulation or even advocacy of youth culture related issues.
