Heute fangen wir mit unserem Themenblock „Aquatische Ökosysteme“ mit einem englischsprachigen Vortrag zum Thema Meeresströmungen – genauer gesagt zur Atlantischen Umwälzzirkulation (auch AMOC genannt) – an. Die AMOC spielt gerade für uns in Nordeuropa eine große Rolle, da ihr Wärmetransport eine wichtige Rolle in unserem Klima spielt. Gleichzeitig gibt es jedoch Forschung dazu, dass die AMOC wegen der Klimakrise schwächer werden oder sogar komplett kollabieren könnte. Wie wahrscheinlich ist das alles und war würde uns erwarten, wenn sich die AMOC ändert? Zu diesem Thema könnt ihr euch also auf den Vortrag „The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. What is it, why do we care, and should we be worried?” von Maya Ben-Yami freuen. Sie hat Astrophysik in Cambridge studiert und schreibt nun ihre Doktorarbeit zu Kipppunkten im Klimasystem mit einem Fokus auf der AMOC am Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung und forscht gleichzeitig an der TU München. --- Today’s English-language lecture on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) will start off our thematic block “Aquatic Ecosystems”. The AMOC plays a central role in the global climate and particularly in our climate in North Europe as it transports heat from the equator towards the poles. Current research, however, speculates that the AMOC might weaken or completely collapse due to the climate crisis. How likely is this and what can we expect, if the AMOC changes? For this topic, we’ll hear Maya Ben-Yami’s lecture “The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. What is it, why do we care, and should we be worried?” Maya Ben-Yami has studied Astrophysics in Cambridge and is now a doctoral student at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, where she writes her dissertation on tipping points in the climate system with a focus on the AMOC. Additionally, she’s a researcher at the Technical University of Munich.
