After a review of the amount of waste suitable for pyrolysis and the current technical developments in pyrolyzing plastics waste and used tyres in Japan and the US, laboratory tests are described. These tests were not based on heat recovery objectives but intended to assess the quantity of chemical raw materials that could be produced by pyrolysis. In specially designed incinerators, waste plastics and used tyres could produce aromates up to 40% of the original material.
