Vocational teaching has so far widely ignored the fact that people can learn, even frequently, from their errors, although there is general agreement on that. The European Union supported project VIRTOOL aims at tackling this misconception. A virtual-reality–based simulation of machine-tools together with series case-studies aim to find out which opportunities exist in the training of mechanics to exploit errors with the help of the appropriate instructional support.
