Beschreibung:
  • We show that heavy fuel leaking out of an old ship wreck 10 km off the Bulgarian Black Sea coast can be identified on spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Sentinel-1A SAR-C and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 imagery is used to demonstrate that the leakage started more than three years ago, in summer 2015, hence it has been going on for a much longer time than stated by local experts. The resulting oil spills can have lengths exceeding 9 km, and they may be (partly) displaced due to strong subsurface currents.
