  • The main objectives of traditional resource management approaches have changed from simple resource analysis and evaluation to integrated management with more emphasis on political and institutional interests as well as on people's perception and conflicting interests. Risk communication became one of the major foci in resource management questions and uncertainty is discovered as a major constraint in planning concepts for the future. Currently there is a search for new theoretical paradigms, which could help to come to grips with the implementation problems of management concepts. In addition, new theoretical approaches could lead to a better understanding of the human-nature interface, in order to come up with the right questions concerning the successes and failures of ecosystem and social system management approaches. The theory of complexity and the analysis of non-linear dynamic systems is used as a tool for understanding such open systems. The case study of the Niagara Escarpment is used as an example to show the applicability of the theory of complexity to resource management problems.
