Many clinical guidelines for the treatment of psychotic disorders recommend psychological interventions in addition to antipsychotic medication. In the current guidelines of the German Society of Psychology the effectiveness of psychological interventions for psychoses was reviewed. These were psychodynamic therapy, client-centered psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (including mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions), psychoeducation, various skills training and family interventions. This article briefly describes each of these interventions and the empirical evidence with respect to various outcome variables. Interventions with a convincing evidence base are cognitive behavioral therapy for reduction of symptoms and psychoeducational family interventions with skills training for preventing relapse. Evidence-based recommendations for treatment decisions are derived and the therapeutic approaches are specified based on examples.
