First ladies play an important role in domestic and international politics in Latin America. Throughout the years, first ladies have obtained new tasks beyond the traditional activities linked only to the protocol and acquired greater influence as policy makers. In this respect, they have shaped their own cabinets, have websites associated with the presidency, participate in presidential summits, play a role with regard to agenda setting and design, and implement programs and policies. First Ladies are increasingly acquiring political capital, influencing governments, and becoming candidates. Twenty former first ladies ran for the presidency, vice presidency, or Congress in Latin America between 1999 and 2016. However, despite the increasing importance of first ladies in Latin American politics, no preceding work has tried to answer under what conditions first ladies participate in politics. The dissertation examined three distinct topics focusing on the political participation of the first ladies at the cross-country level in Latin America from 1990 to 2016. This research analyzed three essays on the following topics: the office of the first lady in Latin America, the career paths of former first ladies in Latin America, and the political capital of former first ladies.
First Ladies spielen sowohl in der nationalen als auch internationalen politik eine wichtige Rolle in Lateinamerika. Im Laufe der Zeit haben First Ladies neue Aufgaben übernommen, die über die traditionelle Protokollarische Funktion hinausgehen. Als politisch Verantwortliche haben sie ihre eigenen Kabinette gestaltet, haben mit der Präsidentschaft verbundene Websites, nehmen an Gipfeltreffen von Präsidenten teil, nehmen Einfluss auf die politische Agenda und implementieren eigene politische Programme. First Ladies bauen vermehrt politisches Kapital auf, beeinflussen Regierungen und kandidieren selbst für politische Ämter. Im Zeitraum von 1999 bis 2016 haben 20 ehemalige First Ladies für das Amt des Präsidenten, des Vize- Präsidenten oder für einen Sitz im Parlament kandidiert. Trotz der zunehmenden Wichtigkeit der First Ladies in Lateinamerika, wurde bisher nicht geklärt, unter welchen Bedingungen First Ladies politisch aktiv werden. Die Dissertation hat drei verschiedene Themen hinsichtlich der politischen Teilnahme der First Ladies länderübergreifend für Lateinamerika zwischen 1990 und 2016 untersucht, nämlich das Amt, die Karrierepfade und das politische Kapital der First Ladies in Lateinamerika.
