This thesis presents eight selected peer-reviewed publications, which focus on four persistent challenges in the fields of virtual and augmented reality: touch interaction in virtual environments, perceptually-inspired locomotion in virtual environments, computer-mediated perceptual illusions, and spatial perception with stereoscopic displays. In particular, the thesis presents evidence of perceptual differences between computer-mediated realities and the real world and discusses creative approaches to alleviate or exploit these differences in the scope of natural user interfaces.
