  • The reconfiguration of national political authority is a particularly sensitive issue in the field of external security and internal protective practices. While the Europeanisation of competences in the fields of internal and external security policymaking has long lagged behind other policy areas, the field of internal security has recently seen an increase in multilevel governance arrangements. Nonetheless, only few studies have addressed multilevel governance of security. This chapter discusses to what extent questions of security provision can usefully be analysed within the multilevel governance framework. It builds on current research on varieties of security governance and asks how the so far disparate research agendas in the fields of public policy and security studies can be better linked. Of particular interest are current efforts to address challenges of European security governance as well as recent research on hybrid and multi-scalar security governance arrangements.
