Climate impact is a major challenge for tomorrow’s air transport. Aviation has been the first global industry sector committing to ambitious climate goals, and in 2016, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) agreed on a CO2 certification standard for aircraft and a global market-based measure to offset emissions. These goals and measures have led to an impressive number of innovation projects such as battery-driven aircraft and a broad variety of sustainable jet fuels. On the other hand, the classical environmental issues of noise and local air quality have not lost importance, and new topics such as aircraft dismantling and recycling are emerging.
