Soils of Yamal and Gydan Peninsula have been investigated with special focus on their geochemical properties. Selected Cryosols, Gleysols, and Peat soils were analyzed in order to gain more detailed information about trace metal background levels and vertical distribution of these compounds in a soil profile. The total organic carbon and nitrogen contents as well as soil pH were analyzed. Bulk forms of trace metals were determined using an X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRS). Preliminary results showed cryoturbation as an important process that governs the element distribution in natural tundra landscapes of northwestern Siberia. Profile distribution of trace metals strongly associates with the presence of organic matter. The obtained data on trace metal concentrations can be used as a reference point to carry out further ecological monitoring in a regional scale.
