  • This paper represents a multi-sensor approach for the imaging of the extremely high Oder river discharge into the Pomeranian Bight of the southern Baltic Sea during the flood period in summer 1997. In order to follow the spreading and the patterns of suspended matter the authors used optical and infrared data acquired by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) aboard the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellites and by the Wide Field Sensor (WIFS) and the Linear Imaging Self-Scanning sensor (LISS) aboard the Indian Remote Sensing Satellites (IRS) 1C and P3. Additionally synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-images acquired from the second European remote sensing satellite (ERS-2) were used under calm weather conditions. Their analysis shows the high potential of the fusion of different optical, infrared and microwave remote sensing data for observation of extremely river discharge in coastal ecosystems.
