Beschreibung:
  • Atomic gratings with periodicities between 15.8 Å and 7.9 Å consisting of Gd chains on a W(110) substrate have been fabricated based on a self-organization phenomenon. The formation of the grating structure requires a repulsive adsorbate-adsorbate interaction which is directly revealed in real space by scanning tunneling microscopy images. The periodicity of the grating can be tuned by the adsorbate coverage. The quasi-one-dimensional structures obtained in this way offer novel opportunities to study electronic and magnetic properties in reduced dimensions. © Springer-Verlag 1997.
