Anisotropic domain walls in magnetic nanostructures with perpendicular anisotropy

- In mesoscopic crystals the orientation of magnetic domain walls is usually determined by the competition between the magnetocrystalline and the shape anisotropy. An isotropic exchange interaction cannot affect the global wall orientation in bulk crystals of cubic symmetry. It will be demonstrated that in nanostructures of a few monolayer thickness the magnetic anisotropy and the magnetostatic energy play a minor role for the wall orientation. In case of low-symmetry objects the orientation of domain walls is mainly determined by the discretness of the atomic lattice structure and by the exchange energy. The reduced symmetry of the film surface and the distortion of the atomic structure due to the pseudomorphic growth of nanoobjects often lead to the orientational dependency of the exchange tensor and, hence, to the anisotropy in the orientation of domain walls. Correlations of the theoretical results and recent experiments on magnetic nanoordering will be given. © 2009 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
