Beschreibung:
  • Social and economic damage caused by extreme weather events: Climate and weather extremes show the effects of climate change on people and ecosystems very directly. Extreme events become disasters for people when they are highly exposed and vulnerable to them. The number of fatalities has therefore fallen significantly in recent decades thanks to better protective measures. Economic losses, on the other hand, has risen sharply because more and more valuable buildings and infrastructure have been built in risky locations. There are serious differences between poorer and richer countries, with the former having by far the most fatalities and the latter having the highest economic damage. Global climate policy should finance cost-effective adaptation measures, especially in the countries of the global south.
