  • With their tree sPecies diversity mixed forests contribute to the three levels of biological diversity. Individuals of the different tree species, which belong to a biocoenosis, are carrier of traits, which are linking these levels of biodiversity with each other and which are mutually influencing these levels even though they are hierarchically structured. The species' ability to adapt to various environmental conditions depends on its functional gene pool, which is ascertainable by means of its genetic diversity. The species diversity is an expression of the prevailing environmental conditions, which define both the presence and the frequency of several species within a forest community. Consequently rather different species diversities can arise on account of various environments. By transspecifically considering the genetic diversity it can be assessed, to which extent different environmental conditions affect the gene pool of a biocoenosis. In the present study the species diversity of natural regeneration in close-to-nature beech and Norway spruce forests in Thuringia as well as their related genetic diversity observed at two enzyme marker systems are considered on the base of published data. By means of transspecific genetic diversity profiles the latently and also the operationally adaptive capacity within forest communities are explained and are discussed in the view of stabilizing measures within the scope of sustainable forest management. It is recommended to assess by long term observations in unexploited as well as in managed forests how adaptive capacities are developing under the respective conditions. © DLV GmbH.
