Green steel production without coal: With around 11% of global CO2 emissions, the steel industry is one of the largest emitters. A largely greenhouse gas-neutral steel production is technically possible today by phasing out coal use in iron making, but requires new production facilities and large quantities of green hydrogen and green electricity. In order to make the transition happen, which in the beginning incurs additional costs, a comprehensive policy package is required that promotes technology development and the availability of green energy and creates markets that can bear the additional costs of green steel through standards and (self-)commitments to the purchase of green steel. If this policy is implemented consistently and successfully, the steel industry could become one of the first climate-neutral industries worldwide, with great advantages for steel manufacturers, workers in the industry and, above all, global climate protection.
