The city as location - the city as products. Approaching the (socio-)economy of cities
Ausgehend von einer Darstellung aktueller stadttheoretischer Debatten, mit dem Fokus auf eine ökonomische Perspektive, bietet der Beitrag zwei Zugänge zur Sozialökonomie der Stadt an. Der Einleitungsartikel einer kumulativen Habilitationsschrift diskutiert dabei die einschlägige stadt-ökonomische Literatur (a) zu Agglomerationseffekten und (b) zur materiellen Produktion der Stadt und stellt diesen die eigenen Arbeiten zur Stadt als Standort der Kreativwirtschaft und zu Großprojekten als Produktionsmodi von Städten gegenüber. Ziel und Ergebnis ist die Formulierung eines nicht totalisierenden theoretischen Zugangs zur Ökonomie der Stadt. Insbesondere stehen dabei Mechanismen der ökonomischen Stadtentwicklung im Zentrum, die außerhalb des Werkzeugkastens der klassischen ökonomischen Forschung liegen.
Based on a review of present debates in urban theory the article offers two approaches to studying the socio-economy of cities. Conceived as the introductory chapter of a cumulative habilitation process the paper discusses the pertinent literature in urban and regional economics with regard to (a) agglomeration economies and (b) the material production of cities. The discussion is then juxtaposed with the author's own contributions to cities as locations of the creative economy and to large-scale projects as production modes of the city, The paper seeks to propose a non-totalizing theory of the economy cities. In particular the contribution focuses on those mechanisms of urban economic development that lie beyond the toolbox of classic economic research.
