Barriers and prospects in pedometer and pedometer app usage in health research with adolescents at school.
Pedometers are supposed to be a promising approach to promote physical activity. This article is primarily concerned with the motivational barriers and prospects of the use of pedometers and pedometer applications (apps) facing the development and meaning of digital media in adolescents' everyday life. Group interviews with students aged 14 to 17 years were conducted to identify differences in pedometer and app use. Summing up the results, motivation of students using apps seems to be higher than motivation of students using pedometers although technical difficulties are more likely to appear in app usage. Both devices can help to increase self-reported physical activity, hoewever, app usage seems to produve slightly lower barriers for students and is furthermore enabling more possibilities to reflect and increase the level of ohysical activity. Especially active feedback as an exclusive feature of apps (e.g. push messages) supports the achievement of step goals.
