Beschreibung:
  • Impact of warming on marine organisms: Marine heatwaves are temporary events lasting several days to months of extremely warm water masses. These carry less oxygen and prevent the aeration of deeper water layers. Warm temperatures accelerate the metabolic rates of marine eurythermal organisms. Aerobic marine organisms reach their physiological capacity limits more quickly in order to transport sufficient oxygen to the cells. This results in reduced growth and migration to colder areas. Heat waves will lead to high mortality rates, especially of sessile animals (corals, mussels). Species shifts, impoverishment of biodiversity with smaller species and shifts in fish catch regions from low to high latitudes will be a global challenge across countries.
