Greece: Heat, fires and floods in 2023 - Forest fires are a regular occurrence in Greece, but the summer of 2023 was exceptional because it mainly affected regions that are home to an intact ecosystem, with a lot of forests and even national parks, as well as agriculture. Extreme temperatures coupled with forests fires form a dangerous cocktail not only for ecosystems, but also for people. Extreme rainfall and flooding not only change and influence agricultural production, but also destroy infrastructure and people‘s belongings, as well as having an impact on mental health. The summer of 2023 was a »crazy summer« for Greece and the affected regions and people have to cope with weather extremes and anthropogenic climate change.
