Liturgical prayers presume a congregation as subject of the prayer. Liturgists face the challenge of using phrases and mental images that enable people to join the prayer. This contribution focuses on the language and contents of opening liturgical prayers. The analysis of forty prayers shows the importance of faith experience as a bonding feature that communicates belonging and identity.
