Beschreibung:
  • The contribution focuses on the relation between Gertrud Luckner (1900–1995) and Shmuel Hugo Bergmann (1883–1975). Luckner, a catholic social worker who took part in the German resistance, was one of the very first Germans to be allowed to visit Israel already in 1951. From that journey it dates her first contact with Bergmann, a Prague born philosopher and professor at the Hebrew University, who later traveled to Freiburg to visit Luckner, first in 1957 and a second time in 1965. Through the help of their correspondence the lecture shows their common interest in spiritual and religious issues, it highlights the important role played by Bergmann's contributions to the «Freiburger Rundbrief»—the journal founded by Luckner, which paved the way to inter-religious dialogue in post-war West Germany and try to convey a different and more positive view of Israel, and finally it shows how, viceversa, Bergmann often referred to Luckner's exemplary life to fight anti-Christian views which emerged in Israel in the early years after the foundation of the state.
