The aim of this chapter is to introduce the theoretical framework of the analyses in the book. It may help us answer questions such as: How is it possible to explain cross-national differences in the amount and structures of informal work and the way it relates to formal employment? Under what conditions does specifi c work appear in informal forms? Under which circumstances is the same work found as formal employment? How can crossnational differences in relation to the amount and structures of informal work be explained?
