Software like PAUP or PHYLIP, developed in the field of phylogenetics, have been used over the last decades in textual criticism. This transfer of technology from one discipline of science to scholarship provoked sceptical reactions. Whereas warnings are indeed welcome, in order to avoid a blind or naïve application of these tools, the rejection of any attempt to formalize and to apply mathematics to the field of stemmatics is simply unacceptable.
