Is it possible to measure extreme events? Conditions are analysed under which the usual measurement devices for air temperature, precipitation, wind speed and sunshine duration can also reliably record extreme values. In principle, this is possible if the devices are used correctly, e.g. the thermometers are ventilated. In some cases, however, extreme values depend on the location and should not be generalised for larger areas. Due to the very heterogeneous distribution of precipitation, radar data analyses must be used in addition to rain gauges in order to reliably determine maxima.
