We report on a temperature‐dependent Mössbauer study of natural and synthetic malayaite, CaSnSiO5. 119Sn spectra have been measured between liquid nitrogen temperatures and 1310 K. The 119Sn Mössbauer shift is found to show a significantly reduced temperature dependence if compared with predictions for the second‐order Doppler contribution. In iron doped malayaite, the two dominating 57Fe subspectra are attributed to ferric ions located on Sn and Ca sites. The temperature‐dependent spectra of 119Sn and 57Fe are discussed in context with the structural anomaly at about 500 K reported by Groat et al. From comparison of quadrupole interactions of tin and iron, an estimate of the nuclear quadrupole moment of 119Sn is derived as Q = 0.13b which is in good agreement with recent studies.
