  • In addition to being the main character used by Pseudo-Dionysius in composing the Corpus Dionysiacum, Dionysius the Areopagite enjoyed several other fictional lives and deaths outside the Corpus. One very important document in this respect is the so-called Autobiography of Dionysius, which, I argue, does not depend on the Corpus Dionysiacum, but rather elaborates on an oral tradition that was still alive in Jerusalem during the second half of the eighth century. A crucial turning point in the evolution of the Dionysian legend and in the influence of the Corpus Dionysiacum in the Greek and Latin worlds is marked by the hagiographic endeavours of two influential figures, Hilduin and Michael Syncellus.
