  • The shear strength of reinforced concrete beams is reduced by axial elongation of the plastic hinge regions during cyclic loading. In members with shear reinforcement this elongation may also affect the path of the shear cracks and the inclination of the compressive stress field. Thus, the effective concrete compressive strength decreases and/or the contribution of the concrete to the shear strength is reduced. This paper presents a model to predict the longitudinal strain (axial elongation) in plastic hinge regions under seismic loading at the shear failure stage. The background for this is the Cracked Membrane Model and the shear design provisions of fib Model Code 2010, respectively. The calculation procedures are based on compatibility considerations and take the longitudinal strain at mid-depth of the beam cross sections into account. The theoretical results are compared to experimental data taken from literature and in general, good correlation is found. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.
