  • This work deals with the investigation of granules as crash absorber in ship building. Using expanded glass granules, the increase in energy dissipation during a ship collision is examined. For this purpose, we investigate a simplified side hull structure. Four experiments are conducted. On the one hand, we carry out reference experiments without granular material. On the other hand, we investigate filled side hull structures and the resulting force–displacement curves with respect to the energy dissipation until rupture of the inner hull. Afterwards, these experiments are simulated using the Finite Element Method. In order to do so, the corresponding material parameters for steel are determined using tension tests. The granules are modelled by means of friction tests and triaxial test, based on the Mohr–Coulomb material model. Finally, the simulation results are discussed and the advantages and disadvantages of the presented modelling approach are presented.
