There is a very extensive literature on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), especially from pediatrics and forensic medicine, as well as various compre- hensive monographs. Here, the current development in the city-state of Ham- burg in the past 20 years shall be briefly commented: for the first time, not a single SIDS case was registered in Ham- burg in 2020. A very positive develop- ment! Compared to the 1980’s and 1990’s, the SIDS incidence today is on a constantly low level. Consistent pre- vention campaigns with regard to risk constellations have been the reason for this positive development. Although there are still many unanswered ques- tions regarding the underlying patho- physiology or etiology of SIDS, the al- most unbelievably beneficial effects of consistent prevention measures on a medically untreatable acute illness are once again apparent.
